I had the absolute privilege of being asked to be one of the judges for the Mr and Miss Ushaka Kids World 2016 competition. It was a really tough job as all the children were so special, beautiful and talented in their own way. The first round was to sift through all the entries and choose our top 25 boys and top 25 girls. Not an easy task!
Round two was to meet the beautiful children while they strutted their stuff on the ramp, showing off their awesome casual wear and very cute swim wear. They were all so nervous but in the end they did a great job and we were able to choose our top 15 boys and top 15 girls, who would go through to the next round.

The third round was a talent selection, where they all had a chance to show us what they were good at. We had dancing, singing, poems and even a drummer to name a few. It was so funny that the adults got to discover what the most popular song amongst the kids was. Out of choice at least half of them chose the same song Whip/Nae Nae by Silento. It was too funny; the judges could not believe that so many kids loved that song. These kids were amazing and really blew us away. It was a tough job to score them as they all Rocked.
Lee-anne and Tyron Els, Yara and Raksha Kistan, Isaiah Sky and Jeremy Govender (waiting for their chance to show off their talent.)
Celeste, Riylee and Raeesa Lucioli (Sydenham) (Waiting for her chance to show off her talent.)
Then it was time for the fourth and final round, the finale. This round was by far my best. The kids really pulled out all the stops with their handsome suits and oh-to-smart evening wear and the girls that looked like princesses on their way to a ball. Their hair was beautiful, and the shoes and dresses were to die for. I could not believe how their confidence had grown in such a short space of time. They truly swept us away. Unfortunately, we had to score them as there could be only one ambassador to win the title of Mr and Miss Ushaka Kids World 2016. Judges Andre-B Van Wyk – Scott former Mr. SA and Marketing Manager at Coastlands, Aaliyah Mia of Urban Life and Style Magazine and myself, Theresa Gilson of Magic Moms had the difficult task of selecting the top three boys and girls, but after much deliberation the top three winners from the overall finalists were selected. It was time for last year’s winners to hand over their crown.
It was time for the amazing MC, Gert Boshoff to announce the winners. In the girls’ category the winner of the Miss uShaka Kids World 2016 title went to Meeka Govender from Phoenix, the 1st runner up was Daniella Burgess from Empangeni and the 2nd runner up was Kyro De Quintal from Overport.
In the boys’ category the winner of the Mr uShaka Kids World 2016 title went to Isaiah Sky Govender from Umhlanga, the 1st runner up was Tyron Els from Sunningdale and the 2nd runner up was Ayanda Nene from Inanda.
Congratulations to all the winners and contestants for showing excellent sportsmanship, parents and family members for their support, the judges for their valuable time, all uShaka Marine World and uShaka Kids World staff involved, the entertainers as well as the MC, Gert Boshoff.
